The Pitau Featured in UNO Magazine

UNO Magazine’s feature, “A Bold Return,” celebrates The Pitau — a refined coastal residence that marks a new chapter in Mount Maunganui’s architectural landscape. I’ve had the privilege of working with Fraser and Donna Sanderson for over a decade across projects ranging from retirement village masterplans to aged-care hospitals. Their vision and trust continue to shape architecture that is both generous and enduring.

A Home of Balance and Connection

The Pitau sits only a few streets from the ocean — designed as a private retreat that remains deeply connected to its coastal context. Softly curving walls and edges temper the strong geometry, echoing the natural forms of the nearby dunes and the shifting lines of sea and sand. These gestures lend the home a sense of movement and calm, creating spaces that feel at once grounded and fluid.

A palette of layered timber, plaster, and stone grounds the architecture in warmth and permanence, while light and shadow animate the interiors throughout the day.

Lasting Relationships and Collaborative Design

At Bassett-Smith Architecture, enduring relationships are at the heart of every project. We work closely with clients, builders, and consultants to shape design experiences. We’re grateful to UNO Magazine for featuring The Pitau — and to the Sandersons, whose ongoing collaboration continues to make work like this possible.
